Flagship Zones

Flagship Zone B is Nusajaya, with planned development of the new Johor state administrative centre, a medical hub, an “educity”, a resort for international tourism and an industrial logistic cluster and Residence Horizon Hills, Bukit Indah.

Flagship Zone C, the Western Gate Development, focuses on the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), providing a second transportation link for Malaysia/Singapore, a free trade zone, the RAMSAR World Heritage Park and the Tanjung Piai.

Flagship Zone D, the Eastern Gate Development, focuses on the Pasir Gudang Port and industrial zone, Tanjung Langsat Port, the Tanjung Langsat Technology Park and the Kim-Kim regional distribution centre. In the final Flagship Zone, Senai-Skudai, development is focused on the Senai International Airport, hubs for cargo and knowledge, a multimodal centre and the MSC Cyberport city.

Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) will hold more roadshows in Singapore within the next six months to attract more investors to Iskandar Malaysia. Singaporeans ‘Wait And See’ Before Investing In Iskandar Malaysia
To date, investment into Iskandar Malaysia has nearly reached RM60 billion, but Singapore’s private sector investment holding is worth only RM2.64 billion, mainly in the region’s manufacturing sector. Singapore investors have shown keen interest in the development of Iskandar Malaysia but are still taking the “wait and see” attitude before going all out to invest there. [Bernama]

LANGFANG (China): Singapore-based Raffles Education Corp Ltd (REC), which aims to set up a multi-institutional education campus at Iskandar Malaysia by 2011, hopes to invest about RM200mil in the proposed venture over the next five years as part of its move to fortify its education business in the region.

Chairman and CEO Chew Hua Seng said in order to set up the campus, they needed to get the approval from Higher Education Ministry which would take about six to nine months.

“After that, we need also to register the programmes which will be offered and, in all, the approval for a licence will take a year or so,” he said after a media tour of REC’s campus – Oriental University City (OUC) – here.

“For investment, REC will need to factor the cost of land and buildings, among others, and we estimate the investment in Iskandar will probably be about RM200mil spread over a five-year period. During this period, we hope to enrol about 5,000 students.”

Oriental University City Ltd (which owns OUC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of REC. For the proposed development, REC would be collaborating with Education@Iskandar Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned unit of Iskandar Investment Bhd, which in turn is 60% owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

The development, to be known as Raffles University Iskandar, would include the launch of Raffles University as part of its first phase of development. The university would be developed on a 26-ha site and would offer a range of undergraduate programmes.

Iskandar Malaysia is a development corridor in the southern Malaysian peninsular. It comprises of Danga Bay (together with A2 Island), Medini, Iskandar Financial District, Nusajaya and several other components. This development corridor is set to boost the country towards becoming a new financial hub in the region.

The Family Indoor Theme Park will be housed in a RM350mil complex. Construction of the complex would start mid-2010 and is expected to be completed at the end-2012. This is in addition to the RM750 million (S$307 million) Legoland outdoor theme park on a 51ha land area in Nusajaya announced last year.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said Legoland Malaysia in Medini and the Family Indoor Theme Park in Puteri Harbour were more for children below 12 years of age. In contrast, Universal Studios which is part of the integrated resort development on Sentosa Island catered more for young adults. Johor is not competing with Singapore in attracting visitors to the two soon-to-be-built theme parks in Iskandar Malaysia.

That was what he said.

We, at JB Cool, think otherwise. With the development of Iskandar Malaysia, it is about time Johor Bahru compete with Singapore in all areas including theme parks. The Nusajaya township, which is a core development in Iskandar Malaysia, is only a 10-minute drive from Johor’s immigration checkpoint at the Second Link. With the exchange rate lower here, tourists have more spending power compares to Singapore.
