For us, Johorean, we can try to surf at Desaru beaches. Seriously, I have no idea at all that Desaru is a location for surfers until I read local newspaper few days ago mentioning it. I haven’t had the time to read the entire article, so I researched about it in Google.

There are some surf activity within the Desaru beach in Johor. Beginner level. Mostly locals and some Singaporean for breaks in weekends. Surfed there once – long baords and boogie boards. Secluded area. Adopted from http://www.globalsurfers.com/read_thread.cfm?ForumID=General&ThreadID=21277&Thread=4658

Well, you can surf actually go straight away to the beach by car and exit at Golden Beach resort. According to some people, the wind in Desaru beaches are good and strong for surfing but the wave is not strong. But, who cares…that’s just a comment from 1 person…

If you are serious and would like to try surfing, I would recommend you to contact Bigfoot Industries. So, who is actually Bigfoot Industries?

Bigfoot Industries was created in 2005 by enthusiasts of extreme sports such as skateboarding, surfing and dirt biking. Sharing a common interest and passion for these sports, these people decided to pull some resources and expertise together. Their professional team has 4 members. And each of them has vital skills that contributes and compliments the team.

Their mission is to help nurture the young and help create an opportunity that was once a dream. In this short period of time, together with the local government, they have created programs and planned events which benefited both the young and the local community. Situated in the heart of Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, they have created a shop that not only stays true to our passion but also contributes back to the community. It has become a popular haunt for the young and upcoming talents in the world of surfing, skateboarding and motocross.

Bigfoot is in other word the company that you can trust to teach and guide you to surf at Desaru. You can get your boards from them either rent or buy it. I’m not sure on further details but if you are want to get wet and rough, call them:

  • That is a pleasant surprise for me too!

What Johor lacks is total tourism planning, it has the potential if fully developed, we can only hope for the Iskandar project can really take off, to attract tourists, instead of relying on Singapore’s ‘spill over’ effect.

Surfing at Desaru would be great once the E22 Expressway is open. They told that E22 Expressway will be opened in Mac 2011. I saw that the Cable Bridge crossing Sg Johor has completed. Cant wait to try across such beautiful bridge. It is estimated that it may only takes 45 minutes from JB to Desaru using the E22 Expressway. Hope Desaru will boom again soon.

My mates often ask me if there’s any surf in Malaysia. My stock reply:

Sure there’s surf in Malaysia. It may not always be huge but it’s real consistent from November till March.

Granted, I wouldn’t really advise anyone to fly in solely for the surf here (although it does get epic from time to time and there’s lots of other sea sports to be had to supplement the surfing anyway).

In other words, if you’re going to be around the Malaysian East Coast for other reasons anyway, then places like Cherating, Desaru and Tanjung Resang for instance are definitely surfable. Not to mention a boat-load of fun!

In fact, I happened to be in Tanjung Resang this 2010/2011 NE monsoon and the waves there were big enough to be intimidating.

We went out for a sail on a trimaran once and it almost felt that our mast was dwarfed by the swell rolling in from the South China Sea.

    So yeah, surf’s definitely up.
