The Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar steered a train to the last stop of the Kembara Mahkota Johor (KMJ) 2010 at JB Sentral here yesterday.

On hand to receive Sultan Ibrahim and his entourage at the end of the 391.3km journey through four districts over three days since last Friday was Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

Sultan Ibrahim was also greeted by about 500 people as the train pulled at the station at 5pm.

The Sultan of Johor steered the train as far as the Gemas station, Negeri Sembilan where he made a turntable procedure, a method of turning long trains at once, Monday morning.

Having succeeded in turning the 86-tonne locomotive in 10 minutes, Sultan Ibrahim was awarded a Class 26 locomotive driving licence by Keretapi Malaya Berhad president Dr Aminuddin Adnan at a ceremony at the station.

Now we know why. The objective was to bring home the KTM train and staff from Singapore on the locomotive’s last journey out just last week.

My friend and I managed to get the very very last tickets for the second-last train out. The ticket counter staff told the poor couple behind us in the queue there were no more tickets. I feel for the couple.

Still, my friend and I relished the train ride. People lined the track almost from start to finish, waving and whooping. And we replied in kind. It was a momentous occasion for all of us.

Afterwards, we took the second-last train back into Singapore from JB, where we saw the Sultan’s train in the Singapore station awaiting his arrival.

The next day, we heard the last trip out, with the Sultan at the controls, went as smooth as silk. Well done.

    Thank you, KTM.
