Yes, we got gold for weightlifting, but not so good news form our rugby team as we lost to Trengganu in the finals. Johor who took the early lead, saw the defending champion level the score and 7-7 but Johor managed another Try to lead 12-7 before a late blitz by Terengganu. But there’s still a Silver medal in hand.

Bad news first …

Terengganu Retain Rugby Gold
A try, seven minutes from time, helped Terengganu come from behind to retain the Sukma rugby gold in a pulsating final at Politeknik Merlimau rugby field near here Thursday. Mohd Hafiizh Zainal was the toast of Terengganu when he sneaked through a tight Johor defence to complete the Try while skipper Mohd Zaki Baru’s successful conversion saw Terengganu emerge 14-12 winners … [Bernama]

And the good news …

Two Johor Strongwomen Shatter National Records at Sukma
Two Johor weightlifters, Arisha Farra Erwin and Tey Shan Fung shattered the national record in their respective events when the 13th Sukma weightlifting competitions came to a close here Thursday. Arisha ruled the women’s Under-75kg category while Tey dominated the Above-75kg category, en route to winning two gold medals each respectively at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Ayer Keroh here Thursday. In the Under-75kg category, Arisha, 22, cleared 85kg in the Snatch and 102kg in Clean & Jerk to erase her old mark of 73kg in Snatch and 95kg in Clean & Jerk which were set in the 2008 Sukma in Terengganu … [Bernama]

Other good news include …

  • Johor’s S. Mathialagan, who won the men’s 800m on Tuesday, bagged the 1,500m gold in 3:59.03.
  • Johorean Nauraj Singh won the gold medal (2.12m) in high jump, but national high jumper S. Navinraj, who will feature in the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore in August, was a letdown. The 17-year-old, personal best of 2.11m, only managed 2.03m to bag the bronze.
