News clipping from NST by Ben Tan dated 22 July 2010
Title: 72 teams in biggest rugby meet
ABOUT 1,000 players from Singapore and Malaysia will take part in the Iskandar Malaysia 10′s Rugby Challenge (IMRC) 2010.
The two-day tournament, which is the biggest in the country with 72 teams, will be held at Dataran Bandaraya Johor Baru on Aug 1.
Previously known as the Tunku Mahkota Johor 7′s Rugby Tournament, IMRC is jointly-organised by Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) and the Johor Rugby Union (JRU) with the support of the Johor Menteri Besar’s Office, State Tourism Council, State Sports Council, State Education Department and Johor Baru City Council.
The tournament was the brainchild of the Sultan of Johor during his reign as Tunku Mahkota.
The meet is divided into two categories — the Under-18 and Under-15.
Celebrity sports commentator Rashid Salleh, who is a rugby fan, is scheduled to host the event. The matches will be telecast live on Astro’s Channel 801.
“This is the third year that Johor is hosting the rugby challenge which will showcase the state’s long and proud rugby history,” said JRU chairman Mohd Noorazam Osman.
Irda chief operating officer Hilmi Mohd Nashir said the regional authority’s participation in the event will be a long-term one.
“Our participation in this sports tournament is going to be a long-term affair as it is a means of exposing the younger generation to a healthy activity,” said Hilmi.
Seri Alam, the subsidiary of United Malayan Land Bhd, later presented jerseys to one of the teams.
