Muzium Layang-Layang Pasir Gudang

The Pasir Gudang Kite Museum, also known as Muzium Layang-Layang Pasir Gudang is located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia. It is is the first in Malaysia which exhibits kites and a variety of materials related to kites. The museum was built as an appreciation towards the contribution of Malaysian and International kite fliers. It was first opened to public in February 2002 during the 7th International Kite Festival.

The museum is currently housing a collection of more than 200 kites which once roam the skies of Bukit Layang-Layang and hundreds of the traditional kite of Malaysia known as Wau.

The main purpose of the construction of this museum is to preserve and uphold our cultural heritage and crafts. In another way, it could also contribute to Malaysian (or Johor specifically) tourism industry.

The museum is divided to 2 levels. Level 1 consist of exhibition area of international kites. You will learn about international kite history, international kite festivals and all the things related to international kites. It also have an audio-video room in level 1.

Level 2 is specifically for Malaysian traditional kite ie Wau. You will learn the traditional Wau history, Wau’s terminology, materials used to make Wau and equipments used to fly Wau. You could also buy Johor crafts as souvenirs here and you could also see a great panorama at Bukit Layang-Layang recreation area which is just outside the museum.

If you go there do not forget to check out the Wau Making Workshop. The workshop demonstrates how to make traditional Wau. It will guide you through the process of Wau Making, from the start to finish and then you can bring home your own Wau to be played or displayed.

Pasir Gudang is located about 40km from Johor Bahru city center. You can use the public transport or drive there yourself. It will take you about 30 minutes if you are driving from the city center. The museum opens daily from Monday to Sunday.
