A walk into the building, you might discover the whole lots of Malays heritage. Since its establishment in 1993, Johor Art Gallery stores various arts and artifacts about Johor’s Malay heritage. The building was initially a residential place built in the year 1910 and known as the Dato’ Abdullah Jaafar building. The residence was once the official residential place for Dato’ Abdullah Jaafar, who was the third Johor Chief Minister during that time. The reason the building is becoming the art gallery due to its unique design and its artistic values that cannot be denied until now.
The details design of this 2-storey building justifies the colonial architectural influences. In order to preserve the true Malay sentiment who used to be barefooted once upon a time, shoes are prohibited in the main display area. There are many beautiful art works from various talented Johorean artists being displayed at the main area. Besides paintings, there are also sculptures that greet the visitors at the main display area here. The undeniable shared pride among the artists here is their apparent love for Johor’s rich, cultural heritage that is still very much alive today. The most favourite themes by the artist basically related about the history and heritage of Johor such as the music of Ghazal, ‘kuda kepang’ and many attractive calligraphy pieces. Not to mention, there are much more soothing work arts are being presented at this gallery.
At the second floor of the gallery, there are even much more art pieces like two ancient wooden doors with ornate carvings hung on the walls welcoming you to enter the area. The fine craftsmanship truly embedded. Perhaps, you can take a glimpse through the lovely chandelier that casting tranquil hues to the entire space area. You can always pay a visit there between 9 in the morning until 4.30 in the afternoon every day to experience yourself with the great welcoming of Johor heritage at the Johor Art Gallery.
