JB Hotels Suffer Due to Price Cut By S’Pore Hotels

September 15, 2008 by alzack

While recent news reported that Johor Bahru based hotel are enjoying early reservation from international Formula 1 enthusiast, now, the hotels are experiencing some bad luck… Check out the following news…

News adopted from Electric News.

THE Singapore hotels’ price-slashing has led to a stalled start for Johor Baru hotels.

Just last week, some JB hotels reported that they are enjoying up to 60 per cent occupancy as their rates are a fraction of those in Singapore. But as Singapore hotels are cutting their rates aggressively to boost occupancy during the F1 weekend, their JB counterparts have been hit by cancellations.

The five-star Puteri Pacific Hotel, which has 500 rooms, had half its 300 tentative bookings cancelled over the last month. It charges RM400 ($166) a night, including breakfast.

Its sales director, Mr Kamarul Annuar, told The New Paper that some bookings were forfeited when the customers failed to make full payment.

He said: ‘It’s been doom and gloom for us. We thought we could bank on the Singapore Grand Prix to improve our occupancy, but now we’re struggling.’

Just last week, 55 Indian tourists cancelled their F1 bookings at the hotel.

Mr Kamarul said: ‘I know some hotels in Singapore have slashed their rates. If it’s cheaper to stay in Singapore, people wouldn’t come to JB because they won’t need to put up with the Causeway jams.’

The five-star Hyatt Regency Johor Bahru, which has filled just 60 of its 406 rooms for the race weekend, has also seen a couple of cancelled reservations. The hotel is offering a three-night package at RM395++ a night.

Ms Lily Tham, marcoms manager of the five-star Mutiara Johor Bahru, said that as of 28 Aug, it has filled only 84 of its 332 rooms for the race weekend, but added that Ramadan is a ‘low period’ for bookings.

More CCTV in Johor Bahru? Yes, they might be doing so with the increasing crime rates. Check this news out:

BAU (Sarawak), Sept 9 (Bernama) — The Housing and Local Government Ministry will bid for more allocations, including for the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras nationwide in response for federal funds requested by the Sarawak government for the local councils, its deputy minister Datuk Robert Lau said Tuesday.

He said the ministry, which received RM75 million this year for the purpose, was working closely with the police to identify high risk crime-prone areas in Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and the Klang valley at present.

“I am confident it will be implemented throughout the country, including Sarawak, especially after the request (for additional funds) as contained in the 2009 Budget was brought to the attention of our minister, Datuk Ong Ka Chuan recently,” he told reporters after accompanying State Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Seri Wong on a familiarisation visit to the Bau District Council here.

Last week, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Mayor Mohammad Atei Abang Medaan said DBKU was actively seeking allocation to install CCTV cameras in crime-prone areas within its jurisdiction.

Johor Bahru to benefit from Singapore F1

This is not a new news for most of us who dwell in Johor Bahru. EVerybody is anticipating the new Formula 1 Night Race hosted by Singapore. As a Johorean, I am also excited but the timing is not right for us because it’s the month of Ramadhan and the Muslim are busy with their prayers in the Holy month.

THE year’s most anticipated Formula One race is so far proving to be beneficial for one of Singapore’s neighbours, but not the other.Hotels in Johor Bahru look set to enjoy good business in the final week of September, when the Sept 28 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix takes place.

This, despite slightly higher room rates of around 10 percent at most establishments. The bookings are fattening up hoteliers’ accounts as Ramadan, which falls from Sept 1-30 this year, is usually a slow period.

The picture, however, is not as bright in Batam. Tourists are not biting even though hotels are offering rates that are similar to JB’s, which are typically about 40 per cent cheaper than their Singapore counterparts’.

Freedom File Fest at Tropical Inn Johor Bahru

This is certainly a new interesting event going to our place. Check it out…

The KOMAS Freedom Film Festival (FFF) is the first film event of its kind in Malaysia. FFF adopts the themes encompassed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which express our aspirations for genuine justice, peace, equality and democracy.
Through an annual film contest, workshops and screenings, FFF creates an annual showcase of outstanding films and documentaries focusing on social issues that affect ordinary people like HIV/AIDS, human rights, poverty and the environment; alternative films which, due to a lack of commercial backing and because of the tyranny of popular mainstream media, are out of the reach to most Malaysians.

FFF is a vital event, providing a venue for the Malaysian public to use the video medium as a tool for social documentation and filmmaking. Technological advances have brought about a democratising effect to filmmaking in recent years. With a video camera in hand, almost any person on the street, and even entire communities, can share their story in the way they want to tell it. Filmmakers are better equipped now to explore and express their skills and passion to produce socially relevant films.

The Fest will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Penang and Johor Bahru. In Johor Bahru, the play will be scheduled from 12-14 September 2008 at Tropical Inn Johor Bahru. Following is the complete address for the FFF event in JB.

Pilihan saya kadang-kadang adalah panggung wayang di Perling Mall. Saya tak ingat nama panggung wayang itu, tapi kalau tak silap namanya Perling Perdana. No telefonnya adalah: 07-2414988.
