The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) plans to undertake a mixed development project with a gross development value of RM5 billion in Johor Bahru, its President Syed Ali Alattas said.

The development of the “Asean Trade Centre” project would be carried out on a 16-hectare piece of land along Pantai Lido which belongs to DPMM.

“The project will take three years to complete and construction works will start once all relevant authority approvals are secured,” Syed Ali told reporters here today.

The project would rejuvenate the area with economic activities and transform Pantai Lido into a vibrant city in the future, he said.

Among the properties in the mixed development project will be commercial, retail and residential units.

Singapore is only a stone throw away from JB. We are sure that if you visit JB, you would have planned a visit to Singapore as well. We will slowly add more information on interesting places, places to eat … etc from Singapore. We hope with that, it will complement the already exciting stuffs we have in JBCool.

Today is about Soya beancurd. Touted for its nutritional benefits, soya bean is a common component in health and beauty products. If you ask your parents, I am sure that they will tell you consuming soya bean helps to boost the female hormones and contributes to making your skin baby smooth. Soya bean products such as drinks and beancurd are popular as dessert or breakfast alternatives. So after your next briyani ayam, how about a bowl of nature’s beauty enhancer; the soya beancurd?

On Short Street in the town district, Rochor Beancurd sits side by side with another beancurd shop. However, judging from the constant stream of customers, it is hard to resist getting beancurd from this olde worlde shop for tea time or even a late night supper. The two-storey shophouse exudes a vintage aura that is reminiscence of old Singapore. With the wooden foldable tables and plastic chairs, enjoying the beancurd here is bound to bring back childhood memories of simple sweet treats.

The beancurd here is made the traditional way. With a tofu-like curd floating in the sugar syrup, the best way to enjoy this classic beancurd is by mashing the beancurd with the spoon. A spoonful of mashed beancurd with the sugar syrup will reveal a distinct taste unlike the beancurd from other established shops. Whatever the secret ingredient is, the final product is a yummy bowl that has a very subtle soya taste with sweet syrup enveloping the beancurd.

To complete the meal, try the youtiao dipped in soya bean milk. The youtiao served here is fluffy and less oily than most versions. Dipping the youtiao in warm soya bean milk is the perfect company for a light snack while hanging out with friends at this humble shop. For those seeking something more than soyabean products, Rochor Beancurd also offers grassjelly drinks, butterfly buns and other friend snacks all within a $2 range.

Outlet Details
Rochor Beancurd
2 Short Street, Singapore 188211
Nearest Parking Area: Along Short Street
Waves LifeStyle Magazine rated it 4 out of 5

ABC stand for Air Batu Campur, but I think many also refers it to Ais Kacang. Regardless of different names, many will unanimously agree that Ais Kacang is everyone’s favorite dish in a hot sunny afternoon One after a lamb shank would really complement you lunch.

Today, it’s all about Tan Kee’s Ais Kacang. Unofficially voted as one of the best in town! Located at the heart of Johor Bahru, at the back row of the MBJB Food Court after Wisma Perseketuan building, Jalan Ayer Molek, owner Mr. Tan Siew Kee has been churning out yummy Ais Kacang for over 40 years since the age of 9!

Signature Item
Tan Kee’s Ais Kacang carries a heavy set of chocolate coating that has become the shops signature. The red bean, syrup and evaporated milk is prepared in advance. The delicious chocolate syrup is homemade, fresh every day. I was delighted to see the rich abundance of corn and red bean and the icing on the cake was savoring with the two ‘atap chi’! No ice was left unflavored, that’s how precise each Ais Kacang is delivered. On the whole, Tan Kee’s Ais Kacang is a must taste by all so don’t miss out folks!

Service
Prompt service is to be expected. It’s part of the MBJB food court so don’t expect any high end stuff, just the everyday food court atmosphere. Mr. Tan Kee walks about chatting up with his customers and taking orders by himself. Many of his customers are loyal patrons for many years! Operating hours is from 7am till 7pm. Priced reasonably at RM 3 per bowl, it’s worth every cent!

Waves LifeStyle Magazine rated it 9.25 out of 10

The mention of Briyani gives almost anyone a warm fuzzy feeling. That’s the beauty of the mere thought of that beautiful golden rice with finely cooked meat topped off with an egg and some acar. At Hyderabad Briyani Restaurant, you can get all that and more!

Food & Drink

Quench your thirst with the ‘Kedondong juice with Asam Boi’, made of fresh kedondong (great hog plum). The Chicken, Mutton and Lamb Shank Briyani all come with similar servings of rice, egg, acar and some dhal. The chicken was fabulous! The portion was perfect and the meat was juicy with precise flavours. The mutton was well cooked and the seasonings used made a lasting impression. As for the first of its kind in Johor Bahru in briyani, the lamb shank’s portion is fit for a king and the meat was very tender, well seared and perfectly seasoned. The owner and chef, Mr. Dean informed us that the traditional recipe used is from Kerala, India, passed down from generations. The briyani rice is boil cooked and has no starch. No coconut milk or ghee is used! How about that for all of you health conscious briyani lovers? He also informed us that the Friday and Saturday specials were fish and prawn briyani done in Hyderabad style as well.

Service

Quick service is what you can expect here. The outlet is not air conditioned but the surrounding open air and fans are enough to keep cool. Operating hours is from 11 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Saturday and they are open for reservations and also offer catering services. Pricing is reasonable and although the lamb shank is priced slightly higher, it’s worth every penny!

[Note] If you missed the earlier announcement. JBCool is running its first contest ever and there are CASH and cool t-shirts to be won. Details here.

Now back to the post

Not everybody in our beloved hometown, Johor Bahru, knows about the importance of staying fit. I’m not saying that they are not concern about their overall health, but the point here is the quantity is not many. Just ask the person sitting next to you, does he (or she) exercise. Does he goes to the gym, or plays badminton, football or tennis.

You will be surprised. Many don’t do it daily or even once a week. Worst still, most of the chores at home are being outsourced. Not many wash their cars by themselves anymore. Not many mow their own lawn. Gardening? I only noticed some old folks doing it, and most houses have maids.

Actually, these simple activities such as washing car, gardening and cleaning your own room could help you to stay active, fit and healthy. Without going to the gym. Don’t you agree? We need to at least exercise 3 times weekly for 30 minutes to stay fit and healthy. That’s the important rule that we need to know and practice. But to do it straight away can be difficult for some, so why not start with washing your own car once a week or trim your own lawn once in a while.

You don’t want to grow old and have pains allover due to neglecting your health and fitness.

The lifestyle in the hustle and bustle city like Johor Bahru seems to be neglecting health and fitness. I must admit that it is quite difficult for people to be involved in sporting activity and stay fit. Most of us are busy managing our daily routine life. I know this for real because I personally find it difficult to find the time to be involved in sporting activities. I have a wife, 3 children, a career, some daily schedules and sometimes some important appointments that I need to take care. My commitments most of time forces me to leave out my physical activities, which is a pity. Early in the morning, the activities already starts such as sending the kids to school, going to work, fetching the kids from school, lunch, work again, get back from work, send kids to tuition, dinner, watch some TV, check the kids homework and then sleep. Then during the weekend, we’ll have several of other activities such as “waking up late”, shopping, watching movies, visiting parents and friends, and others. Very few of us spend the weekend to go to places such as Hutan Bandar Johor Bahru, Hutan Bandar Mutiara Rini or Taman Setia Tropika playground/park to jog and have some physical activities with their family.

I strongly believe there should be more involvement from various parties at various levels to promote more sporting activities and healthy lifestyle. For example, at each residential area, there must be ample parks, playgrounds, fields, halls for surrounding dwellers to come and do relevant physical activities. Residents can play football, cycle, jog, play badminton etc. The good management of these places can become a venue that will entice people to come and visit more often to stay fit. From what I can see, there are residential areas that provide such facilities. Sadly, there are also some residential areas that only provide a piece of land for playground that is not even well maintained.

Last year, the committee of surau at my residential area organized a one day futsal tournament in conjunction of Maulud Nabi program (Remembrance of the Prophet PBUH birth). The program involved dwellers in our housing area from teenagers to adult. A team must comprise 5 adults and 3 teenagers. There were about 8 teams and participants were not necessarily those who visit the surau for prayers. Anybody can participate as long as they live in our housing area. It was an excellent program that united the residents and at the same time allowed us to have fun via healthy sporting activity. I can say it was a huge success. Money was never the goal, instead the unity and sporting activity, in remembrance of the Prophet PBUH was the prime target. I wish and hope more of such activities can be organized in future.

Societies, organizations, clubs etc should come out and organize more sporting activities in the city or district level. The “Larian Bandaraya Johor Bahru 2012” organized by Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) last February, the upcoming “Larian Hijau Bandaraya” organized by IRDA on the 14th of April 2012, “Penawar-Pengerang Run 2012” organized by KEJORA this coming June 2012 is a good initiative and effort executed by local authorities. Such activities can into certain extend help Johoreans to get involved in some physical sporting activities.

There are several cycling clubs in town for those who love to cycle in Johor Bahru. There are also horse riding field come with horses and trainers for those who would like to try out equestrian (in UTM). Our town maybe lacking of good swimming pools but that is not a reason for us not to swim. There are some decent public swimming pools like the one in Larkin, Taman Universiti Club house and others. I can see more private gymnasiums are opened in several district in Johor Bahru which is a good indicator. It signals that there are more customer that want to stay fit and healthy. I would like to mention more activities that we can participate in more specifically such as fishing, go-karting, golfing, self-defence, boating and others, but then the list will be longer. You can do your own research of your favorite sporting activities.

For those who still have problem in searching your favorite sporting activities, you need to identify at least one and stick on it. It all depends on your initiative and discipline. To end this article, I would like to share here are some tips that we can apply to stay fit and healthy that could be done within our daily activities or during weekend (from my own experience). It may be difficult for some of us but we need to try our best to do it.

Here they are:

Wash your own vehicle yourself. That includes exterior and interior. It will take around 1 hour but it will make you sweat, just like jogging for 20 minutes. Besides saving some money, you get to clean your own car and indirectly you are exercising.

Do massive spring cleaning in and outside of your house without stopping. Clean, mop and swipe rooms, dining and living hall. Wash your bathroom. Do not stop. Do all of this consecutively and you will get a clean house + good sweat which equals to a 30-50 minutes jogging.

Park your car further from your office or work area. This will force you to walk more which is an indirect exercise.

Use staircase instead of lift or escalator. Climbing the stairs can be an excellent indirect exercise.

If you can afford the time, go jogging around your house. Download android or apple pedometer app into your smart phone and witness yourself the burning of your own calorie while you jog. If you are too boring to jog, then listen to some music or radio from your smart phone.

Japanese investors will develop and manage Malaysia’s first “Little Japan” township in Taman Molek.

Capitalising on the strong demand from Japanese high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) keen on making Malaysia their second home, a group of Japanese investors will be investing in a development project that will result in Malaysia’s first-ever “Little Japan”.

The self-contained township – to be located within Taman Molek in Johor Bahru – will be developed by Global Asia Assets (M) Sdn Bhd (GAAM), which hopes to woo 2,000 Japanese HNWIs to live, work or conduct commerce here over the next few years.

GAAM is the appointed consultant for the project, and represents a group of Japanese investors that remain unnamed. According to chief executive officer Fujimura Masanori, about 70 Japanese citizens had moved into Taman Molek under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme since March 2011.

Additionally, there was also more than RM 400 million worth of commercial and residential properties acquired by 365 Japanese individuals since January 2011. These investors are expected to move into their newly bought properties as owner-occupiers soon.

“In view of the overwhelming response, we are eager to kick start the ‘Little Japan’ project in Taman Molek where Japanese individuals are expected to invest over RM 500 million in landed houses and luxury apartments over the next few years,” said Fujimura.

Designed to be a self-contained township for the convenience of residents, “Little Japan” will include restaurants, spas, medical facilities and retirement homes catered to ethnic Japanese wishing to live and work in Malaysia.

Japanese investors traditionally avoid investments outside of Japan, consequently saving up large amounts of liquid assets stored in banks. They have responded favourably to GAAM’s offering, taking up over 50% of Molek Pine Tower 3, a high-end, 248-unit condominium project by Kuok Group subsidiary, Tanjung Bintang Sdn Bhd.

“The developer, in view of the overwhelming response from Japanese buyers, will refit the units with special Japanese features such as Onsen-Spa facilities, Ofuro (Japanese bathtub) and Zen concept landscaping,” said Fujimura.

“Our clients have already committed over RM 400 million in the purchase of units in various residential schemes in Taman Molek and Taman Ponderosa, which is yet another project by Berinda,” he added.
